Minisites :: Projects :: Marine Studies Centre
http://www.meirion-dwyfor.ac.uk
The team on the Hafan Site, near to Pwllheli Marina, includes well-known yachtsman Richard Tudor, who skippered 'Nuclear Electric' in her 'round the world' race and has twice circumnavigated the globe. Other members of staff are specialist marine engineers and experts in workshop machine shop practise and boat-fitting. Subjects taught include welding, machine shop operations, electronics, pneumatics, hydraulics, carpentry and engine maintenance. All students also have the opportunity to add RYA courses to their studies if they so wish.
The courses run at the centre offer 'hands on' skills for those wishing to follow small boat-building careers. RYA provide training in specific marine skills, including VHF operation and navigation courses.
A new and welcome addition to the team during November 2006 was Andrew Ferguson who, as a mechanical engineer, gained his B.Sc. in Australia. Andrew was formerly a Chief Engineer on fast ferries operating in European waters. His own specialised fields of experience complement the wide range of skills held by the team on the Hafan site and further expands the range of units being taught.
Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor is keen to provide new courses to support local business and has active involvement with employers, in the tailoring of specialist courses to suit their requirements. A new welding shop has recently been added which is now being used for the teaching of Oxy-Acetylene, MIG and TIG welding on a variety of materials including stainless steel and aluminium.
For information about the courses run at the centre, see the courses section of the website or post an on-line enquiry.
