National Certificate in Land-Based Technology
This is a course for those who wish to pursue a career in agriculture, forestry or related land-based industries and want to be able to correctly use, repair and maintain a variety of agricultural machinery and equipment.

Course duration:
1 year, full-time or 2 years, part time.

What will I need to follow the course?
You will need at least 4 GCSEs at grade C or above, or a First Diploma in Farm Machinery to do this course. The requirements for adults will be different.

What will I study?
The course combines practical and academic work. It comprises the units listed below. Core units 1 : Project 2 : Small Business Management 3 : Land-based Vehicle Chassis Systems 4 : Fault Diagnosis and Rectification 5 : Vehicle Science and Mathematics 6 : Land-based vehicle Transmission Systems Learners must select 6 specialist units – at least four of which must be technical units (in bold). 7 : Industry Experience 8 : Land-based Vehicle Engine Technology 9 : Hydraulics/Pneumatics Principles 10 : Repair Processes and Materials Technology 11 : Mechanical Power Transmission 12 : Engineering Drawing 13 : Vehicle Electrical Systems 14 : Agri-machinery : Cultivation and Planting 15 : Agri-machinery : Application Equipment 16 : Agri-machinery : Harvesting Equipment 1 17 : Agri-machinery : Harvesting Equipment 2 18 : Health, Safety & Welfare 19 : Construction Plant Machinery and Mechanisms 20 : Tool Hire Machinery and Mechanisms 21 : Commercial Horticulture Machinery 22 : Groundcare Machinery 23 : Forestry Machinery and Mechanisms 24 : 4WD Vehicle, Recover, Operate and Maintain 25 : LBV Familiarization and Management 26 : Principles of Machinery 27 : Vehicle Electrical Components 28 : Diesel Fuel Injection Systems 29 : Computer Application and Control 30 : Mathematics for Land-based Technology 31 : Science for Land-based Technology 32 : Machine

Will I have to sit any examinations?
There are no examinations, but your assignments and practical work will be assessed during the course.

What will I have at the end of the course?
On successful completion of the course, you will be awarded a National Certificate in Land-based Technology. Other certificates may be offered such as Certificates of Competency in the Safe Use of Chain-saws and of Pesticides.

What next?
You will be able to progress to an ND course in Land-based Technology or gain employment as an agricultural mechanic, or assist in making your own farm or business self-sufficient in repairs and servicing costs.
