BTEC First Certificate / Diploma in Horse Care Course modules include horse welfare, behavior, horse presentation, handling and exercise. The equitation module is of paramount importance with students participating in riding four times each week.
Upon successful completion and a positive tutor report it is possible to progress on to the National Diploma / Certificate.
The First Diploma is equivalent to four GCSE grade A* - C and may be taken as a full-time or part-time course. The Certificate is normally undertaken part-time over one year.
This is a practical, work-related course aimed at developing a wide range of skills and knowledge. You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. It covers basic knowledge and technical practical skills.

What will I study?
This course provides a basic introduction to the equine industry. You will learn a great deal of theory, develop numerous practical skills, and undertake research. You will spend a total of 6 weeks undertaking work experience. This will prepare you for a range of occupations involving horses. You will study the units listed below.
Two core units:
Industry Experience
Industry and Organizations
Four specialist units from the following:
Horse Behaviour and Welfare
Introduction to Biology
Estate Skills
Habitat Establishment and Maintenance
Horse Handling and Exercise
Horse Care
Horse Preparation and Presentation
Riding Horses
Will I have to sit any examinations?
There are no examinations but you will carry out assignments during the year.
What will I have at the end of the course?
Upon successful completion of the course you will be awarded a First Diploma in Horse Care. During the course you will also have the opportunity to gain additional qualifications, namely BHS, NVQ Level 1, Riding and Road Safety Test.
What next?
Upon completion of the course you will be able to study for a National Diploma or National Certificate in Equine Studies or complete the BHS examinations. Career options include employment as a stable worker or groom.
