Mr John E Tudor CBE, Chairman of the College Corporation. (2009-04-21 )

It is with great sadness that we hear of the death of Mr John E Tudor CBE, Chairman of the College Corporation.

John had been Chairman of the Corporation since the formation of Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor in 1993. Before that, he had been the Chairman of the Governors of Coleg Meirionnydd since its inception, as well as being a prominent member of Gwynedd Council, Snowdonia National Park Authority, and other national and local bodies. He had also been a Chairman of Gwynedd Council, and a long-serving Chairman of the Snowdonia National Park Authority, prior to his decision to stand down from public office a few years ago. His contribution to public life in Gwynedd and Wales was remarkable.

I first met John when I was appointed Principal of Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor in 1997, and I always received valuable support from him in my work. He was a hard taskmaster not to be taken lightly. He was totally supportive of our work at the College, and the wellbeing of the students, and a flourishing life for this locality, were very close to his heart. His humour, common sense and personal support – sometimes in difficult situations – were very much appreciated.

In his public addresses, John would always refer to two things:

I second both sentiments.

John died yesterday (Sunday), after returning from a holiday with his daughter, Ruth, and her family. His family meant a great deal to him, and the time spent in their company, before his unexpected death, would have been a source of immense joy for him.

We extend our sincerest condolences to all his family. He will be sadly missed by us.
