North Wales Colleges to move towards closer collaborative working (2009-03-13 )

Coleg Llandrillo Cymru and Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor are to enter a feasibility stage to investigate closer collaborative working that may lead to a more formal partnership following discussions between the two Governing Bodies.

“Working together with Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor, we are looking at ways to strengthen and expand the opportunities and choices available to learners in the area” said Coleg Llandrillo Cymru Principal, Huw Evans OBE.

“Our proposals include significant investment in staff at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor and related infrastructure. Both colleges bring strengths to the table which can only be of benefit to learners in this part of North Wales. The coming together of the two colleges will provide strength and vision for the long term development of post-16 education in the area”.

Dr Ian J Rees, Principal of Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor said “We are keen to collaborate with Coleg Llandrillo Cymru as a way of further developing the choices available to learners in Meirionnydd and Dwyfor. We will certainly be retaining and developing our bilingual provision so that the learners in the area can continue to study in the language of their choice.”

Dr Rees went on to say “We are committed to providing high quality, bilingual, provision for learners, and this collaboration will allow this to continue. This will also open up the possibilities of enhanced employer engagement in the area. It will be to the benefit of the learners, staff, local employers and the area in general”.

Coleg Llandrillo Cymru is the largest College in North Wales and, following a hugely successful series of Government inspections, is recognised as being one of the very best in the UK. As well as offering Further Education opportunities across all programme areas, the College also delivers an extensive vocational Higher Education Programme.

Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor is a tertiary college that specialises in bilingual learning. As well as serving the Meirionnydd and Dwyfor areas of north west Wales, it has an extensive land-based provision at its Glynllifon site outside Caernarfon. Over recent years, the College has developed a range of Welsh language distance learning provision, and many learners in other parts of Wales receive A level courses by video teaching from the college.

It is anticipated that the feasibility stage will be concluded in July 2009. It is also anticipated that these proposed developments may lead the way to creating a new learning infrastructure in a large part of North Wales, which could become the model for future partnership working across Wales.

The colleges have jointly prepared a short document that highlights their commitment to their areas following this process (attached).
